Back pain is one of the most common health complaints among adults in the United States and it’s a complaint every chiropractor in Frisco TX has seen in his practice – usually on a daily basis. And chiropractors know that spinal pain is such a common problem because people tend to overlook the importance of caring for their backs. To help keep your back in good shape, the American Chiropractic Association offers the following tips:
When Standing
▸ Take the pressure off your lower back by standing with one foot slightly in front of the other with your knees slightly bent. Also, don’t stand bent forward at the waist for long periods as this can cause pain in your lower back.
When Lifting
▸ Always avoid twisting while lifting. This is very dangerous for your spine. If you’re having a hard time lifting a heavy object, push it instead. If it must be lifted, get help.
When Sitting
▸ Try to keep your knees slightly higher than your hips when seated and avoid slouching or leaning forward. This is especially important when driving for long periods.
When Bending and Reaching
▸ Never bend over at the waist to pick heavy things up from the floor. Instead, kneel next to the item you need to pick up – with one foot and one knee on the floor – and pick the item up. Or bend at the knees to reach the item to pick it up. Remember, lift with your legs not your back.
When Carrying
▸ If you must carry something heavy, carry it close to your body. If possible, divide the weight up into two loads – one for each arm.
When Sleeping
▸ Sleeping on your back puts pressure on your spine so try another position. If you must sleep on your back, place a pillow under your knees to take some of the pressure off your spine. If you sleep on your side, place a pillow between your knees to relieve spinal pressure.
Diet and Exercise
▸ Try to avoid carrying excess weight. While not every chiropractor in Frisco TX agrees that this puts pressure on the spine, it can’t hurt to try to stay within 10 pounds of your ideal weight, which you can do by exercising and eating a balanced diet.
Smoking
▸ Stop! Smokers have more back pain than non-smokers plus smoking slows the healing process. So if your back is already injured, it will take longer to heal if you’re still smoking.
